Tokyo Mew Mew

Came across my Mew Ichigo cosplay costumes while going through my closet in preparation for Halloween. For those who don't follow anime or manga, Mew Ichigo is a character from Tokyo Mew Mew, a manga series that tells the tales of five girls who had their DNA infused with animal DNA thus giving them special powers. The genetic fusion of cat and girl created the heroic character Mew Ichigo.

How would it feel like to possess certain characteristics and abilities of a particular animal while maintaining our humanity? what chimera (human/animal hybrid) would you like to be if given the choice or chance? How would our society handle the infusion of these potential fantastic creatures? One of my favorite science fiction novels, The Island of Doctor Moreau written in the 19th century by H.G. Wells touched on the idea of such a society. Dr. Moreau essentially created a terrifying world of living monstrosities. Perfect read to get into the frightful spirit of Halloween.

The ability to alter ones gene may potentially lead to new treatments in diabetes and other chronic illnesses that plaques most of us. In spite of the tremendous potential in future genetic research and advancement, the idea of leading us to a world similar to Dr. Moreau's Island is alarming. It comes down to the battle between scientific progression and ethics, neither of which I am qualified to discuss.

For now, let us amuse our selves with the ghastly creation that science has to offer all in the name of gene therapy advancement. Behold the Glow-in-the-dark Kitty who's DNA were inserted with fluorescent protein making genes by their scientist creators producing it's glow in the dark skin.
